Banks in the 27 countries of the European Union: an open dataset

Snapshot as of 2 November 2026 · 4,604 credit institutions on the ECB list · next version: May 2027

Every credit institution on the European Central Bank’s list in the 27 EU member states. We checked all 1,939 national banks and branches of foreign banks one by one on their own websites: do they offer a current account to individual customers, do they pay a bonus for opening one, and what does the account cost if you meet no conditions. Every amount comes with the bank’s URL and a verbatim sentence from its page. The remaining 2,665 are local cooperative banks, savings banks and credit unions: they are in the file but not compared. The dataset is free, under CC BY 4.0.

CSV · all institutions banki-2026-11-02.csv 4,604 rows, 29 columns

UTF-8 with a byte order mark, comma-separated, with a decimal point. One row is one institution on the ECB list; join rows on the “riad” column (the ECB code) or “lei”. Amounts are in the bank’s currency (column “currency”) and in euro at the ECB reference rate of 29 October 2026. Column names are in Polish and never change; the dictionary below explains each one. The file banki.csv always holds the latest version, while a file with a date in its name never changes. New countries and registers arrive as new rows. Every version is also deposited on Zenodo (CERN) with a DOI; all versions together: 10.5281/zenodo.23855547. The dataset is also listed on dane.gov.pl, Poland’s open data portal.

Where in Europe are the banks based?

The map shows every institution on the ECB list at its registered office. The largest clusters are Paris (151), Milan (92) and Luxembourg (84): financial centres where investment banks, custodians and private banks sit next to banks for individual customers.

Every dot is a bank: where they are based in Europe

4,597 of 4,604 credit institutions on the ECB list, at their registered office. Institutions in the same city form a spiral, so the size of a cluster is the number of banks.

Where does it come from and how do we check it?

The starting point is the ECB list of monetary financial institutions of 28 October 2026, category credit institutions: 4,604 entries from 27 countries (Source: ECB statistics). On 31 October 2026 we compared it with the European Banking Authority’s Credit Institutions Register and found no operating institution missing from the ECB list.

Local cooperative banks, savings banks and credit unions (2,665) stay in the file with the status “not_compared”: they serve their own region, and in many countries there are hundreds of them, so comparing them with nationwide banks would be uneven. We checked the remaining 1,939 national banks and branches one by one, all of them, not a sample.

For each bank we read its website (from 29 October 2026 to 2 November 2026): does it offer a personal current account to individual customers, and if so, does a new customer get cash for opening it and what does the account cost if you meet no conditions. A verbatim sentence from the bank’s page, terms or price list backs every amount (columns “quote” and “fee_quote”), and we keep a copy. When a site blocks automated reading, we use a web.archive.org copy no older than 30 days. We do not get around bot protection: pages we could not read have the status “could_not_read” and are left out of the shares. After the first pass there were 285; a second pass with an ordinary browser left 234.

An account opening bonus is cash a bank pays a new customer just for a personal current account once conditions such as card payments or incoming transfers are met. Cashback, referral bonuses and account switching bonuses have their own columns and are not part of the comparison. Polish bonuses come from our catalogue of bank promotions, checked against the banks’ terms. Euro amounts use the ECB reference rates of 29 October 2026: €1 = 24.336 CZK, €1 = 365.95 HUF, €1 = 4.3938 PLN, €1 = 5.3441 RON, €1 = 10.9995 SEK, €1 = 7.4736 DKK.

What is not in the dataset?

Business offers, bonuses for existing customers and fees other than the monthly account fee (cards, transfers, cash machines). Countries outside the EU. Local institutions in the comparison: they are in the file as “not_compared”, country by country:

  • Germany: 950
  • Poland: 504
